Avoca is situated on the crossroads of the Pyrenees and Sunraysia Highways, 71 kilometres northwest of Ballarat. The town is nestled in the gently undulating basin of the Avoca River, with the Pyrenees Ranges rising to the west.
During the goldrush, Avoca’s population was estimated at well over 50,000 as prospectors flocked to the region to find their fortune. These days, Avoca has a much smaller population but has capitalised on the growing tourism market in the region.
The Avoca district has built up a reputation for fine wines with local vineyards attracting thousands of visitors a year. Wineries include Eurabbie Estate, Mount Avoca, Blue Pyrenees, Cullenya and St Ignatius.
The Avoca Races and the annual Petanque Tournament are also big drawcards. Avoca is well served by a local hospital, a primary school, numerous shops and regular bus services to Maryborough and Ballarat. At the 2006 census, the population of Avoca and district was 1,224.
