Beaufort is located on the Western Highway between Ballarat and Ararat. The base of the Pyrenees Shire headquarters, Beaufort is a thriving rural town servicing farms and smaller townships in the district.
Gold was discovered in the district in 1852 at Firey Creek which in turn supported a population of around 100,000 at the height of the goldrush. Today, Beaufort is much smaller but is served by a state-of-the-art public hospital, a primary and secondary school, a thriving retail precinct, regular train services to Melbourne and Ararat and plenty of great cafes and pubs.
The town also boasts an array of social and sporting clubs including football, netball, cricket, golf, bowls, basketball, squash, tennis, Probus, Rotary, Apex and the Red Cross. At the 2006 census, the population of Beaufort and district was 1,459.
