Bird flu edges closer to the Grampians
POULTRY farms and people with backyard chickens are being urged to monitor their birds as the deadly bird flu virus moves closer to our region.
A bird with the H5 bird flu virus was detected last week in Hamilton.
In the Ararat district, one report of a dead bird has been made to Agriculture Victoria, with another five around Stawell, two in Beaufort and another two in the Avoca district.
However the cause of the deaths in our region is still under investigation.
Community members are advised to avoid touching sick or dead wildlife wherever possible and keep pets away from animals and carcasses.
Member for Lowan Emma Kealy is encouraging people to be vigilant and report any cases or sick or dead wildlife.
“Unfortunately, this virus can spread rapidly, so awareness and information are vital in helping control the potential spread,” she said.
“Signs to look out for in wild birds include difficulty standing or walking properly; a droopy or puffed-up appearance; breathing problems; unusual posture; or sudden death, particularly in large numbers.
“If you see a sick or injured bird with any of these symptoms, please avoid direct contact and make a report as soon as possible.”
Along with one reported death on Ararat, a further five have been received from Stawell and two more in the Grampians.
People who see sick or dead birds or wildlife are asked to make a report via the Agriculture Victoria website or call the
Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
