OPINION - Cr Bob Sanders, Mayor Ararat Rural City Council
Council is now well into planning for the festive season, and I am pleased to say there will be plenty happening across Ararat Rural City in the lead-up to Christmas. This is always a busy and enjoyable time of year. The warmer weather encourages people to get out and about, catch up with friends and family, support local businesses and enjoy the many events that bring our towns together.

Council staff are working on plans for new Christmas decorations across the municipality, including in our townships. We know the festive season means different things to different people, but it is also an opportunity to create a welcoming atmosphere, brighten our streets and give people another reason to spend time in town.
It is important that Ararat and our smaller communities feel included in the celebrations. Whether you are in Ararat, Moyston, Pomonal, Willaura, Streatham or one of our other communities, there will be opportunities to come together and enjoy what makes this part of the world such a great place to live.
There is already a very full calendar taking shape.
We are looking forward to the annual Carols by Candlelight, which is always a wonderful family event and a chance for the community to celebrate together. The debutante ball is another important occasion for local families and young people, while the East Grampians Business Awards gala dinner will give us the opportunity to recognise the hard work, innovation and contribution of our local businesses.
There will also be Diwali celebrations, markets, live shows, book launches and a range of activities for people of all ages and interests. It is a great reminder that our municipality has a strong and diverse community, with many people prepared to put in the effort to organise events, support local talent and bring others together.
Comedy fans will also be well catered for, with performances planned in both Streatham and Willaura. It is terrific to see high-quality entertainment coming to our rural communities, including performers such as Troy Kinne, Dave O’Neil and Brad Oakes. Events such as these are not only enjoyable; they support local venues and give residents something different to experience close to home. The Neil Murray gig in Moyston selling out so quickly is a great example of this.
There really will be something for everyone in the months ahead.
Attend a market, see a show, visit a book launch, take the family to carols or enjoy a meal before an event. Every time we support a local business, volunteer group, artist, venue or event organiser, we help keep our communities active and connected.
As we move towards Christmas, let us make the most of the wonderful things happening across Ararat Rural City and continue to shop local wherever possible.
