Police urge residents to secure property after thefts

AVOCA Police are urging residents to lock their vehicles and secure their property following a two-week crime spree that saw 11 cars broken into, two shed burglaries, and the theft of a motor vehicle.
Sergeant Nicole Harrison confirmed that the incidents are part of an ongoing investigation.
“We’ve had quite a few thefts from motor vehicles, within the CBD of Avoca. So what we are encouraging is, to please lock your vehicles and make sure they are secure, along with sheds,” Sergeant Harrison said.
Most incidents have occurred between midnight and 3am, after police have finished their shifts.
The thefts appear to be opportunistic, with offenders checking for unlocked cars and sheds rather than targeting homes.
“We haven’t had houses broken into. It’s mainly a convenience thing, people trying car doors, and if it’s open, they rifle through,” she said.
Sergeant Harrison recommends residents remove valuables from their cars or store them out of sight.
“It’s a lovely country town, and we probably haven’t had this (wide scale theft) here, but obviously there is people around that will be taking advantage of that. Pop things in the boot if you have a boot, and if you're going inside, by all means take your values inside,” she said.
She also encourages installing CCTV cameras where possible, as police have already received some useful footage and are still undertaking some enquiries.
Police are asking residents to report any suspicious behaviour to help build a case.
“We are a 16-hour station, so we’re not always here. If we’re available, please come in and report incidents to us. Otherwise, call the Police Assistance Line at 131 444, or for urgent matters, contact Triple Zero or Crime Stoppers,” said Sergeant Harrison.
