Road rescue workshop for local emergency services
PYRENEES emergency service agencies recently came together for a major motor vehicle accident road rescue simulation in Lexton. The exercise involved Avoca and Lexton CFA, Avoca Police, Ballarat Rescue, Ambulance Victoria, and Ballarat Highway Patrol, who worked side by side to safely recover two casualties from the staged crash.
The training focused on interagency cooperation, with teams practicing patient management, fire suppression, scene preservation, and recovery techniques.
Avoca CFA Captain Nick Morrison said the day was invaluable for local crews.
“Probably one of the highlights of the day was how well everyone worked together. The mentoring between other agencies worked really well, and the guys got a lot out of it.”
Captain Morrison said the chance to stop and review procedures mid-scenario was especially useful.
“To be able to pause the job, pause the scene halfway through and talk about an issue, and then move forward, you don’t get that opportunity on a real job,” he explained.
He added the exercise delivered some of the most valuable training possible.
He explained that time is of the essence when crews turn up on scene and having refreshed training means everyone knows exactly what the next step is, giving confidence back to members that no scene is too big of a challenge.
“To me it’s some of the best kind of training you can get, as close as you can get to the real-life scenario.”
